James Rodriguez is widely regarded at Everton as one of the biggest signings of the Premier League era.

The Colombian arrived at Goodison Park upon the expiry of his contract at Real Madrid in 2020 to link up with former boss Carlo Ancelotti, but lasted only one year on Merseyside.

Everton explored the possibility of bringing Rodriguez back to Merseyside in 2023 during his spell at Olympiacos but a move failed to materialise.

Now, the stars are aligning for a sensational return to Goodison Park as Colombian journalist Pipe Sierra reported via X (3 January) that the midfielder has begun the process of terminating his contract at Rayo Vallecano.

The Blues are desperate for a creative outlet after scoring only 15 goals in their first 18 Premier League fixtures, and Rodriguez could be the answer to all of Sean Dyche’s problems.

Rafa Benitez is one of the most hated figures on the blue half of Merseyside for a long list of reasons, but none more than his treatment of Rodriguez.

The former Liverpool boss succeeded Ancelotti after he decided to return to Real Madrid and wasted no time cutting the Colombian’s massive contract from the wage bill.

Rodriguez admitted he would have liked to have remained at Everton “for much longer” and blamed Benitez for his short stint at Goodison Park.

His love affair with the Toffees has continued long after his departure, and he even teased the supporters of a return in a social media post before his move to LaLiga when he responded to a fan comment to “come home” with the reply: “Last dance?”

Dyche is facing the most pivotal period of his Blues career, and unless he finds a solution to the lack of goals at Goodison Park, he will pay the ultimate price.

Rodriguez, while 33, would still arrive at the Toffees as the most esteemed member of the squad, and paired with his creativity, flair, and affiliation among the supporters, it is truly a match made in heaven.

All Everton supporters would agree Rodriguez has unfinished business at Goodison Park – even on a short-term deal, he can transform Dyche’s fortunes and help the boss retain their Premier League status ahead of the move to Bramley-Moore.

As things stand, this is all merely speculation, but should Rodriguez indeed become available in January, Dyche must ensure he gets those above him to pull the trigger on a short-term deal.
