Newcastle took a major step toward securing Champions League football on Monday night as Kieran Trippier helped to secure three points for the Magpies.
Eddie Howe’s team defeated West Ham 1-0 in a tense game at the London Stadium where Bruno Guimaraes’ 62nd-minute goal proved to be the decider.

Newcastle kept their first clean sheet since defeating Arsenal 2-0 in the second leg of their EFL Cup semi-final on 5 February, with Trippier playing a key role in that.

The victory helped propel Newcastle up the Premier League table as they moved into sixth place to keep their Champions League aspirations alive.

Newcastle are just two points behind fourth-placed Chelsea, while there is only four points between them and Nottingham Forest in third.

The victory was an important one for Newcastle, not only in terms of getting points on the board, but also for momentum heading into the EFL Cup final against Liverpool on Sunday (16 March).
Howe’s men had lost their previous outing against Brighton in the FA Cup, therefore getting immediately back to winning ways was crucial for their self-belief.
That’s something Trippier highlighted with his Instagram message as he said, “3 points and a clean sheet the perfect preparation for Sundays Final.”

Newcastle are dealing with an injury nightmare
Trippier is very likely to start the upcoming EFL Cup final as Howe is without Lewis Hall for the remainder of the season due to a foot injury.
Hall’s situation is a significant blow to the Magpies given his impressive performances this season, but it has opened up an opportunity for the experienced full-back to get some more game time.
Trippier hasn’t been the first-choice for Howe this season and has only played 23 games in all competitions, but he is set to be relied upon between now and the end of the campaign.
Hall is just the latest in an injury crisis for Newcastle, with Howe dealing with several defensive issues at the moment that are stretching his squad depth.
Sven Botman is sidelined with a knee injury while Jamaal Lascelles is also out of action due to a cruciate ligament issue, plus Newcastle will be without the suspended Anthony Gordon for their trip to Wembley Stadium.
