Sporting CP may have exited the UEFA Champions League at the round of 16 stage, but their narrow 1-0 aggregate defeat to Arsenal—one of the Premier League’s standout sides under Mikel Arteta—was far from disappointing.
Despite the elimination, Uruguayan full-back Araujo delivered an outstanding individual campaign. The 26-year-old currently leads the Champions League charts for tackles this season, underlining his defensive quality at the highest level.
His performances have quickly attracted attention across Europe. Arsenal are understood to have already held talks over a potential summer move for the versatile defender, who can operate both as a left-back and further forward as a winger. Although his contract includes a £70 million release clause, reports suggest Sporting could be open to offers in the region of €50 million (£43 million).
However, Arsenal are not alone in the race.
Aston Villa have also emerged as strong contenders, with manager Unai Emery eager to strengthen his options at left-back. Current starter Lucas Digne is viewed as a dependable option, but not quite at the elite level required for Villa’s ambitions.
Former scout Mick Brown commented on the situation:
“Left-back is a position Emery wants to strengthen. Digne is a solid player, but if Villa want to reach the next level, it’s an area they need to improve.”
Competition for Araujo’s signature is expected to be intense, with Tottenham Hotspur, Newcastle United, Manchester City, and Manchester United all reportedly monitoring his situation.
