Celtic clinched their 14th Scottish Premiership title in 15 years after a stunning late comeback secured a dramatic 3-1 victory over Hearts at Celtic Park.
Hearts came into the final day knowing that just a draw would hand them their first league title since 1960 and end the Old Firm dominance that has lasted for decades. Derek McInnes’ side had led the league for most of the season and looked on course to make history when captain Lawrence Shankland headed them into the lead before halftime.
But Celtic responded in stoppage time of the first half when Arne Engels converted a penalty after a handball decision against Hearts.
The second half was filled with tension as Celtic pushed for the winning goal while Hearts defended desperately. With only minutes remaining, Daizen Maeda finally broke Hearts’ resistance, scoring a goal that was initially ruled out for offside before VAR confirmed it would stand.
As Hearts pushed everyone forward searching for an equaliser, Callum Osmand sealed the title in dramatic fashion by running nearly the full length of the pitch before rolling the ball into an empty net to make it 3-1.
The final whistle sparked wild celebrations inside Celtic Park as supporters flooded onto the pitch while devastated Hearts players were escorted away.
Martin O’Neill, who returned twice this season to guide Celtic through a turbulent campaign, praised the players and fans after securing another historic title for the club.
For Hearts, the defeat was another heartbreaking final-day collapse despite an incredible season that saw them come closer than any non-Old Firm club has in decades to winning the Scottish title.
