Unai Emery is already preparing for another huge summer at Aston Villa as the Spaniard looks to build on one of the greatest seasons in the club’s modern history. Following Europa League glory and Champions League qualification, attention has now turned toward key decisions both on and off the pitch.
The first major move of the window saw Donyell Malen complete a permanent transfer to Roma, with more business expected in the coming weeks. However, the upcoming World Cup could slow activity across Europe, forcing clubs to remain patient during the early stages of the market.
One of Emery’s biggest calls surrounds Douglas Luiz. Villa have the option to re-sign the Brazilian midfielder from Juventus for £23million, two years after selling him for nearly double that amount. Luiz returned on loan in January after injuries to Boubacar Kamara, Youri Tielemans and John McGinn left Villa short in midfield.
Although he initially featured regularly, Luiz eventually fell out of favour as Emery preferred Lamare Bogarde and Victor Lindelof in deeper roles during the closing weeks of the season. The midfielder is eager to remain at Villa Park, where he previously made 200 appearances and played a huge role in the club’s rise.
Elsewhere, Villa are also prioritising new contracts for several key stars. Ezri Konsa, Pau Torres and Tielemans are among those expected to enter talks soon, while Emi Buendia’s future will also be discussed with just one year remaining on his deal.
Adding younger players to an experienced squad is another priority as Emery plans the next phase of Villa’s ambitious project.
