Former Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert believes the club’s remarkable rise under NSWE shows just how important strong leadership and infrastructure are to success in modern football.
Lambert, who managed Villa between 2012 and 2015, endured a difficult spell during Randy Lerner’s final years as owner. The club battled relegation while trying to reduce wages and operate with limited financial backing. Recruitment was often focused on bargains from lower leagues or overseas markets, with only a handful of success stories emerging during that period.
Speaking about Villa’s current position, Lambert admitted the club now looks completely transformed compared to the one he left behind a decade ago.
“There’s no comparison,” he explained. “Absolutely zero comparison. It’s great to see Aston Villa where it should be. The fan base, the stadium, the training ground and the manager are all fantastic.”
Lambert also praised Unai Emery for the work he has done since arriving at Villa Park, describing the Spaniard as a “revelation” after leading the club back into the Champions League while also delivering Europa League success.
The former Villa boss believes the biggest difference lies behind the scenes, with NSWE creating stability and unity throughout the football club.
“When I was there, we knew players had to be sold because the owner wanted to sell the club,” Lambert said. “That made everything difficult. You couldn’t really speak openly because it only created more problems.”
By contrast, he says the current structure gives Villa the platform to compete at the highest level again.
“There’s unity now,” Lambert added. “If the infrastructure above you is strong, you always have a chance. Aston Villa have that unity again, and that’s why the club is moving forward so quickly.”
