Aston Villa are preparing for a busy summer transfer window as Unai Emery looks to strengthen his squad ahead of the club’s return to the Champions League.
One position attracting attention is goalkeeper, with uncertainty continuing to surround Emi Martinez’s future. The Argentina international has been linked with a move away from Villa Park, prompting Villa to assess potential replacements. Borussia Monchengladbach goalkeeper Moritz Nicolas has emerged as a target after an impressive Bundesliga campaign in which he kept 13 clean sheets in 34 appearances. While German clubs can trigger a special release clause worth between €10m and €15m, Premier League sides would need to pay around €15m. Nicolas has earned praise for his consistent performances, with Monchengladbach staff describing him as one of the Bundesliga’s standout goalkeepers.
Meanwhile, Villa have reportedly decided against making Douglas Luiz’s second spell at the club permanent. The Brazilian midfielder returned on loan in January following injuries to several key midfielders, but struggled to secure a regular place in Emery’s side. Despite making 20 appearances and scoring once, Luiz found himself behind younger options in the pecking order. As a result, Villa will not activate the £25m purchase option, and the 28-year-old is expected to return to Juventus for pre-season.
Villa are also monitoring Bologna winger Jonathan Rowe. The former Norwich City attacker enjoyed the most productive season of his career in Italy, scoring eight goals and providing five assists in Serie A. His performances have attracted interest from several Premier League clubs, including Chelsea, while Bologna are believed to value him at between €40m and €45m.
Rowe previously spoke highly of Aston Villa and even scored against Emery’s side during their Europa League meeting. With Champions League football on offer, Villa could hold an advantage in the race should they decide to make a concrete move for the winger this summer.
