Aston Villa have made an initial offer of €17m for Almeria midfielder Dion Lopy, a player Unai Emery reportedly views as the new Felipe Melo. Reports from Spain claim Villa have opened formal negotiations, but Almeria want at least €20m before considering a sale. With the midfielder under contract until 2029, the Segunda Division side are in a strong position, although the gap between the two clubs is only €3m.
Lopy is no stranger to Villa’s recruitment team. The Senegal international was monitored before leaving Stade Reims for Almeria, while Everton also explored a move last summer. Villa’s long-term interest now appears to be turning into concrete action.
Almeria are still fighting for a return to La Liga and see Lopy as a key figure in their plans. Selling him would provide a major financial boost, but it would also leave a significant hole in the squad. Reports suggest the Spanish club have already identified Real Zaragoza midfielder Yussif Saidu as a possible replacement.
The 24-year-old contributed three goals and two assists in 26 league appearances last season, earning a reputation as one of the division’s most complete midfielders. Emery’s admiration is believed to stem from his time managing Almeria, where he worked with former Brazil international Felipe Melo. The Villa boss reportedly sees similarities in Lopy’s physical presence, tactical intelligence and ability to shield the defence.
For Villa, matching Almeria’s valuation could prove a wise investment. Champions League football demands greater depth and quality, and Lopy appears to fit a genuine need in midfield. With a manager who clearly believes in him and the attraction of Premier League football, Villa may hold the strongest hand if negotiations continue. Paying the full asking price now could prevent rival interest, accelerate the deal, and give Emery his preferred midfield anchor immediately.
