While supporters naturally pay close attention to high-profile arrivals, United’s hierarchy continue to invest heavily in youth recruitment, believing the next generation can play a vital role in the club’s long-term ambitions.
Competition for elite teenage talent has intensified in recent years, with several Premier League rivals battling for the signatures of highly-rated youngsters across South America and beyond.
The Red Devils appear to have won another one of those recruitment battles.
Manchester United are now expected to officially unveil Cristian Orozco once his transfer is fully completed next week after seeing off competition from Leeds United and several other interested Premier League clubs.
The youngster’s arrival is set to be announced alongside the expected signings of Andrey Santos and Karl Darlow, with all three deals moving towards completion this month.
Unlike Santos and Darlow, who are expected to strengthen the senior squad immediately, Orozco will initially join Manchester United’s Under-21 setup as he begins adapting to English football.
The Colombian prospect celebrates his 18th birthday on Monday, allowing United to officially register him as a player.
He has already arrived in England ahead of the formal completion of the move, giving him time to settle into his new surroundings before the announcement is made.
Orozco previously visited Manchester back in December, where he toured both Carrington and Old Trafford while also spending time training alongside several of United’s academy teams.
The defensive midfielder first attracted widespread attention after playing a major role in helping Colombia reach the final of the Under-17 South American Championship, performances which convinced United’s scouting department to accelerate their pursuit.
Within the club, Orozco is viewed as another exciting long-term project capable of eventually challenging for first-team opportunities if his development continues on its current trajectory.
His profile has already drawn comparisons with Sekou Kone, who arrived at Manchester United from Guidars FC during the 2024 summer transfer window after impressing at the FIFA Under-17 World Cup.
Just as Kone’s international displays alerted United’s scouts, Orozco’s performances on the South American stage convinced the recruitment team they had identified another player with significant potential.
Manchester United have increasingly expanded their academy recruitment beyond Europe in recent years, largely due to post-Brexit regulations limiting the recruitment of young European players.
Meanwhile, the club are also closing in on the signing of experienced goalkeeper Karl Darlow, who will provide backup to first-choice goalkeeper Senne Lammens after leaving Leeds United as a free agent.
Brazilian midfielder Andrey Santos is also edging closer to Old Trafford, with United expected to pay around £50 million to secure his services from Chelsea as Erik ten Hag continues reshaping his squad ahead of the new campaign.
