Leeds United have officially confirmed the departure of veteran goalkeeper Karl Darlow following the expiration of his contract. The 35-year-old is set to cross the Pennines to join bitter rivals Manchester United, marking the end of his three-year stint at Elland Road.
Although Leeds management held renewal talks with the veteran shot-stopper at the conclusion of last season, they were unable to guarantee him the starting spot for the upcoming campaign. Seeking a dependable backup to challenge Senne Lammens and upgrade on Altay Bayindir, Manchester United swooped in to secure the Welsh international. Darlow reportedly chose the move to Old Trafford in pursuit of a lucrative final contract, especially given the distinct possibility that he would fall back into a secondary role at Leeds.
Darlow originally arrived at Elland Road from Newcastle United in the summer of 2023 for a fee of £400,000. Because his contract has now run down, he leaves West Yorkshire on a free transfer. Though he began each of his three seasons with the Whites as the second-choice option, his persistence saw him reclaim the number one jersey in both of the last two campaigns.
His impact on the club’s recent history was significant. During the 2024/25 season, manager Daniel Farke dropped the error-prone Illan Meslier for the final seven matches, trusting Darlow to guide Leeds to the Championship title and automatic promotion. Last season, Darlow again seized his opportunity, displacing summer signing Lucas Perri in January. He finished the year with 22 league appearances and five clean sheets, highlighted by a spectacular stop against Wolves’ Ladislav Krejci that won the Premier League Save of the Month award for April.
In a statement releasing the news, Leeds United noted that they had offered the keeper a extension:
”Despite the offer of a new deal to remain in West Yorkshire, the goalkeeper wished to explore a different challenge and leaves the Whites with the best wishes of everyone at Elland Road. The 35-year-old departs Elland Road having made 38 appearances for the Whites, playing an important role in the team’s 2024/25 Sky Bet Championship title-winning season and helping the club retain their Premier League status.”
Darlow’s exit leaves Leeds exceptionally thin in the goalkeeping department. With Illan Meslier having already departed for Arsenal on a free transfer in June, Lucas Perri and Alex Cairns, who recently signed a new deal, are the only senior keepers remaining on the books. While rumors in Italy suggested Perri was in talks with Torino, club insiders confirmed he was present for the first day of pre-season training and is currently the de facto starter.
Recruiting a new number one has now become a top priority for Leeds in the transfer window. The club is monitoring Parma’s 23-year-old Japanese international Zion Suzuki, though they face stiff competition from Newcastle United and have yet to launch a formal bid.
