Leeds United are refusing to abandon their pursuit of what has been described as their dream signing, with Daniel Farke prepared to wait for the perfect opportunity to land England goalkeeper James Trafford this summer.
The Whites are prioritising a new first-choice goalkeeper following Karl Darlow’s departure to Manchester United, leaving Lucas Perri and Alex Cairns as the club’s only senior options ahead of the new Premier League campaign.
Despite already strengthening the squad with the arrivals of Harry Wilson and £34 million defender Tarik Muharemovic, Leeds are yet to make their decisive move between the posts.
That delay, however, appears to be entirely intentional.
According to Yorkshire Evening Post journalist Graham Smyth, Leeds have identified Trafford as their number one target and are prepared to remain patient while the goalkeeper’s future is resolved.
Trafford’s move to Manchester City was expected to establish him among Europe’s elite, but the 23-year-old has struggled for regular first-team football behind Gianluigi Donnarumma.
With Manchester City reportedly willing to listen to offers in the region of £35-40 million, Leeds are positioning themselves to strike if the opportunity presents itself.
Speaking on the Inside Elland Road podcast, Smyth explained the club’s thinking.
“I think they [Leeds] are waiting for Trafford. I think Trafford’s future will be decided now that the World Cup is over.
“I think Leeds are waiting for them to get themselves into a good position and jostle with others to try and get him in. Dream signing if they can get it over the line.”
Leeds know they will face serious competition for the England international.
Newcastle United have also been strongly linked with Trafford as they continue searching for long-term competition in goal. However, Leeds believe they may be able to offer something equally attractive—a genuine opportunity to become the club’s undisputed number one.
That could prove decisive given Trafford’s lack of regular football since joining Manchester City.
Meanwhile, uncertainty continues to surround Lucas Perri’s future at Elland Road after speculation that Leeds would be prepared to listen to offers if the right proposal arrives.
Should Perri leave, signing a new goalkeeper would become even more urgent.
With England’s World Cup campaign now over, Trafford’s future is expected to become much clearer over the coming days, and Leeds are hopeful their patience will finally be rewarded.
Farke has already shown this summer that he is prepared to wait for the right player rather than rush into deals, and Trafford remains the goalkeeper Leeds believe can anchor their defence for years to come as they prepare for another demanding Premier League season.
