Zlatan Ibrahimovic has never been shy about grabbing attention. But his latest comment about Celtic has crossed a line that even his most loyal admirers will find hard to defend.
At a recent public event, the Swedish legend was handed a microphone and asked about Celtic, to which he responded with a simple question: “What is Celtic?” The remark drew an immediate reaction from event host Ethan Payne, better known as Behzinga, who burst out laughing before firing a blunt warning at Ibrahimovic. “Scottish people won’t be happy with that,” he said.
And he was absolutely right.
The comment spread fast. Celtic fans were not impressed, and the football world quickly took notice. For most people, you could write it off as classic Zlatan theatre. The man has built a career on provocations just as much as he has on goals. But here is the thing that makes this one different. Ibrahimovic is not some outsider who has never encountered Celtic. He knows exactly what the club is.
He first experienced Celtic Park as an Ajax player back in 2001, when Martin O’Neill’s Celtic side knocked Ajax out of the Champions League qualifiers despite losing the home leg. That night at Parkhead is the kind of atmosphere that stays with a player. You do not forget a crowd like that.
He returned to Glasgow with AC Milan in 2020 for a Europa League fixture, and even though supporters were banned from attending because of Covid restrictions, Ibrahimovic made it clear before the game that he understood the reputation of Celtic Park and was genuinely disappointed the stadium would be empty.
So the “What is Celtic?” line is not ignorance. It is a stunt. And the problem with stunts like this is that they tend to age badly, especially when the person doing it has publicly praised the very thing they are now pretending not to recognise.
Ibrahimovic himself has previously said that Celtic is a club with a big tradition and that it is a place any top player would want to end their career, adding that after seeing what Celtic Park is like, it is easy to understand why Henrik Larsson chose to stay as long as he did.
Those are not the words of a man who does not know what Celtic is.
What this moment really shows is that Ibrahimovic leaning into his “larger than life” persona still has real consequences. Celtic is not just a football club to the people who follow it. It is culture, identity, and history. Dismissing it for a cheap laugh in a room full of cameras is the kind of thing that follows you.
Scotland has a long memory. And as Behzinga put it plainly, they will not be happy with that.
