Newcastle are advancing in talks to prolong the services of another key player currently at risk of departing at the end of the season.
So much of the January conversation has centred around potential outgoings, with Martin Dubravka, Sean Longstaff and Miguel Almiron all linked with an exit
However, we must also sort the futures of a few first teamers approaching the final few months of their contract, with one appearing close to extending their stay.

Fabian Schar’s seven season stay at St. James Park is in the process of being extended with talks at an advanced stage, reports Fabrizio Romano.
In a post on X, Romano said: “Understand Newcastle are stepping up efforts in talks over new deal for Fabian Schär. Negotiations underway and advancing well as Newcastle want to make it happen and keep Schär at the club.”
The Swiss star, who announced his retirement from international football, has been a mainstay of Howe’s backline and it’s no shock that we are keen to keep him – especially with our lack of strength in the back-line.
A new centre-back, likely to be Schar’s long-term replacement, may arrive at some point in 2025, but keeping the former Basel man for at least another season makes total sense.
A no-brainer for Newcastle United?
Schar, now 33, has started in 17 of our 20 Premier League matches so far and missed only the Nottingham Forest game in the Carabao Cup before serving his suspension against Arsenal in the first leg of the semi-final.
Out of contract at the end of the season, Schar is ageing like a fine wine and seems to be going from strength to strength under Howe’s guidance. It’s a no-brainer to keep him and clear from previous interviews that he’s loving life on Tyneside.
Schar understands the system in which we play and would be an ideal player for a young centre-back – whether that be Lens’ Abdukodir Khusanov or not – to learn from in the hopes of creating a longstanding partner for Sven Botman.
