Wayne Rooney could return to Everton as assistant to David Moyes, talkSPORT reporter Alex Crook has said.
The Toffees sacked manager Sean Dyche on Thursday (9 January), and Football Insider understands Moyes is poised to return to the club to replace him.
Rooney meanwhile is out of work after leaving his role as manager of Championship side Plymouth Argyle on New Years’ Eve.
The former Man United and England striker also had two spells at boyhood club Everton as a player, including right at the start of his senior career, when he was given his debut by Moyes.
Now Crook believes that the pair could be reunited to take charge of first-team affairs at Goodison Park going forward.
Speaking on talkSPORT about who could be Moyes’ assistant at the Toffees, the reporter stated another ex-Evertonian, Lee Carsley, would not leave his role in charge of England’s Under 21s to be a number two.

After former Watford and Birmingham striker Troy Deeney then suggested Rooney for the role, Crook was quoted as responding with the line: “Yeah, I wouldn’t rule that out.”

Rooney’s last two spells as a manager in the Championship with Birmingham City and Plymouth have pretty much ended in disaster for him.
As a result a role as a number two at Everton could make sense for him, since not being the main man in the dugout would take some of the scrutiny off him.
After what he has had to endure at the likes of Plymouth, having a period where he is not in the spotlight as much could help him.
Working as an assistant would also allow him to remain within the game, keeping the door open for other potential managerial opportunities in the future.
A return to Everton would no doubt also mean a lot to him, not least if he reunited with a manager he has history with in the form of Moyes as well.
Given the 61-year-old could also teach him plenty about being a manager, it could be an important learning experience that stands him in good stead for the rest of his career as well.
