A few sales may change our stance on signings and it seems one is finally close to completion, with Miguel Almiron all set to end his six-year stay at St James’ Park. Sky Sports reveal Almiron agreement In a Wednesday afternoon update, Sky Sports have revealed that fee Newcastle United look set to receive from Atlanta United for the 30-year-old. They report that Newcastle will receive an initial £8m plus £3m in add-ons for the Paraguayan, who is ‘close’ to completing a return to the MLS. In fact, Atlanta are closing in on a north-east double deal and MLS record, with Sky Sports revealing that Middlesbrough striker Emmanuel Latte Lath looks set to join Almiron in an £18m move from Teesside. Both Almiron and Latte Lath look set to take up a Designated Player spot and an international roster slot with Atlanta, with the MLS’ Designated Player rule allowing teams to recruit a maximum of three players whose wages exceed the salary cap in place. The right move for all parties An £11m package is decent business considering Almiron is now 30 and out of Eddie Howe’s first team plans after struggling for form over the past 18 months. He’ll also strip around £60,000 off the wage bill and return to the club where he enjoyed several brilliant years, with Almiron shining at Atlanta before sealing a £21m move to St James’ Park under Rafa Benitez back in January 2019. It seems unlikely that we sign a replacement this month, much to the frustration of many supporters. However, if that is the case, we’ll have to hope Jacob Murphy continues to do a job and a top quality right-winger that’s worth the wait arrives this summer.
