Tottenham Hotspur’s recent signing of Czech goalkeeper Antonín Kinský has added an intriguing twist to the club’s goalkeeping dynamics, raising questions about Guglielmo Vicario’s long-term future in North London.

Kinský joined Spurs from Slavia Prague in a £12.5 million deal earlier this month, signing a six-and-a-half-year contract.
While the move was initially seen as a solution to Tottenham’s injury woes—Vicario and Fraser Forster were both sidelined—Kinský’s standout performances have fuelled speculation that he could become the club’s first-choice goalkeeper.
Since stepping in, Kinský has made an immediate impact, featuring in four matches and recording two clean sheets.
Among his highlights was a commanding display in Tottenham’s 1-0 victory over Liverpool in the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final.
John Wenham, a prominent voice in the Tottenham community through Lilywhite Rose, has suggested that Kinský’s rise could unsettle Vicario, who may start considering a summer exit.
Wenham also emphasised Kinský’s opportunity to solidify his place with several winnable fixtures ahead, potentially making it difficult for Vicario to reclaim his spot in the team.
Speaking to Tottenham News, Wenham said:
“I believe Kinský will be our first-choice goalkeeper moving forward.
“Therefore, do you think Vicario is happy about being the number two? Absolutely not. He will have ambitions of his own. Since joining Spurs, he has become an Italy international player. Therefore, I think Vicario might be angling for a transfer away from the club in the summer.
“Kinský has a great opportunity to establish himself with some winnable games coming up. As a result, it would then be difficult for Vicario to get himself back in the side.”

Vicario’s season took an unfortunate turn in November when he suffered a fractured ankle during Tottenham’s match against Manchester City. Despite playing on for nearly an hour with the injury, the Italian underwent surgery and has been sidelined for 16 matches. Before his setback, the Italian international was undisputed Spurs’ first-choice keeper, making 15 appearances across all competitions.
Meanwhile, Kinský has stepped up admirably in Vicario’s absence, featuring in four matches and already earning two clean sheets.
As Vicario inches closer to full fitness, manager Ange Postecoglou faces a tough decision: whether to restore Vicario to the starting lineup or continue placing faith in the young and promising Kinský.
This competition for the No. 1 spot creates both a challenge and an opportunity for Spurs. However, if Vicario is unable to reclaim his place, it might force him to reassess his future in North London come summer.
