Aston Villa defender Tyrone Mings left the pitch in tears against West Ham as his injury woes continued.
The centre-back only recently returned after a lengthy absence with a knee injury. He kept playing after receiving treatment following a painful first-half challenge, but pulled up before half-time as it became clear he couldn’t continue.
It appeared to be a knee problem once again for the former Bournemouth man. He eventually made way for left-back Ian Maatsen, with Lucas Digne moving into the middle of the defence, and former Villa defender Stephen Warnock felt the change should have come sooner.
“Tyrone Mings has done something serious,” Warnock said on BBC Radio 5 Live. “They should’ve got him off earlier, you can leave him on and it gets more serious. I know it’s not a nice situation but you have to deal with that.”
Mings had faced a long journey back after his serious knee injury, sustained on the opening wekeend of the 2023-24 season. The 31-year-old didn’t play again until October of this year, after more than 14 months on the sidelines.
After returning to action with outings in the Carabao Cup and Champions League, the centre-back made his fifth straight league start against West Ham on Sunday. He also played against the Hammers in the FA Cup, captaining Villa to a 2-1 win in the third round.
While the extent of the latest setback is unknown, Mings’ injury leaves Villa particularly light at the back. Diego Carlos has been allowed to leave for Fenerbahce, with manager Unai Emery yet to sign a replacement.

Speaking ahead of Villa’s Champions League defeat against Monaco in midweek, Mings admitted he had not yet reached the point where he felt comfortable putting the last 18 months out of his mind. “I would say another 3 or 4 months of playing continuously is when I will stop thinking about the injury,” he said.
“The fact that I’ve been out, and to stop being so rusty in certain situations – there are so many things that you only experience in a game. There is no grace period – you’re either good or you’re not.”
Mings’ injury against West Ham came with his team one goal to the good after Jacob Ramsey’s early opener. They went in 1-0 ahead at the break, with the two teams playing out nine added minutes – some of which were due to the delay as the defender received treatment – but Emerson ensured the visitors left Villa Park with a point.
