Newcastle United are already lining up their first summer signing.
It’s been a quiet January transfer window for the Magpies – much to the frustration of supporters – with the only major pieces of busy being outgoings.
A big-name incoming alludes Newcastle for a third successive transfer window but the hope is that will change in the summer. By not spending, United, in theory, should be in a stronger position amid Premier League Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR).
Although head coach Eddie Howe hasn’t yet confirmed whether or not that is the case. Howe said on Friday: “I think that’s a question for another day. We haven’t sat down and had those conversations and sort of a clear picture of our financial situation.
“Obviously we did in preparation for this window, but everything has been quite short term and quite rightly because our focus is on what we can and can’t do this window and what we need to do.
“And then obviously the summer window will look differently, no doubt. But in terms of sort of the details of that, I’ve got no idea at the minute.”
Newcastle United in talks over first summer deal
While fans are hoping to see Newcastle splash some cash, the club’s first summer signing could be a free agent.
According to the Daily Mail, Newcastle have held talks with Malaga winger Antonio Cordero over a pre-contract agreement. If signed, the 18-year-old would move to St James’ Park in the summer when his contract expires at the Liga Segunda club.
Cordero has gone on to establish himself as a regular in Malaga’s first-team since making his debut in 2023. This season, the teenager has made 22 appearances in Spain’s second-tier, scoring four goals and registering six assists.
He has also represented Spain at under-19s level.
Signing players with high potential
While there have been no senior incomings at Newcastle this winter, the recruitment team have signed players with high potential.
Georgian forward Vakhtang Salia will join from Dinamo Tbilisi when he turns 18 in August while Republic of Ireland youth international Kyle Fitzgerald last week joined from Galway United.
Sporting director Paul Mitchell previously explained: : “Scouting and recruiting emerging talent is an essential part of building a sustainable future, particularly within the current PSR framework, so the market is fiercely competitive.
“We continue to scout extensively, both domestically and overseas, with a view to securing players who can come through our talent pathway and, ideally, become part of the first team in future.”
