The transfer window remains open in certain countries and Newcastle United may have another bid to contend with.
Miguel Almiron and Lloyd Kelly were shifted on to Atlanta United and Juventus respectively in the late stages of the English transfer window, leaving our squad looking a little light in areas but helping boost our finances from a PSR perspective.
Now, a few days on from his superb display in Wednesday’s 2-0 win over Arsenal in the Carabao Cup semi-final, Kieran Trippier is receiving late interest from abroad.
Club pushing to sign Trippier
According to ESPN, Turkish giants Galatasaray are continuing their push to sign veteran Newcastle defender Kieran Trippier, having until Tuesday February 11 to complete any business.
A deal for Trippier would prove “complicated” and it sounds like we have a strong chance of retaining the right-back, as the Super Lig side must complete a deal before the end of play today to register Trippier in their UEFA squad list ahead of the Europa League knockout stage.
The 34-year-old has recently been displaced in Eddie Howe’s starting 11 by Tino Livramento, but was handed a rare start in the second leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final as Newcastle shifted to a back five.
However, after a tough season where Trippier has been searching for form and fitness, he proved why he is a valuable member of the squad on the night with tenacious display.
Newcastle must resist late bids
Wednesday night served as a reminder of the importance of Trippier’s leadership and experience within the squad, especially on such big occasions. The right-back, who ended the game adorning the armband after Bruno Guimaraes, showed his class and set the tone against the Gunners.
Tino can be considered first choice and the long-term future of the right-back position, but Newcastle would do well to steer clear of weakening a third area of their squad following the departures of Almiron and Kelly – especially with a colossal few months ahead.
A fee of just €5m is being touted for the defender who runs out of contract next summer. Trippier’s experience may prove pivotal in lifting the Carabao Cup and securing Champions League football via the Premier League, making the value of a potential sale minimal.
Based on the season-defining run of fixtures to come, it is a no-brainer for Newcastle to resist another sale and keep Trippier on Tyneside for at least a few more months.
