Despite heading into the game full of confidence due to both their away form and the alarming dip in form the Premier League champions have endured, Newcastle United were thrashed again at the Etihad Stadium.
Indeed, Newcastle lost 4-0 at City, with Omar Marmoush scoring a first-half hat-trick before James McAtee added a late fourth.
It was a thoroughly miserable afternoon in Manchester and a result that sent Eddie Howe’s side down to seventh in the Premier League table.

Trippier was caught out for Marmoush’s first goal, misjudging the flight of the ball and getting a headed clearance all wrong before the City forward raced in and lobbed Martin Dubravka.
It wasn’t a vintage showing from the former England international and a reminder of his struggles for much of the past year, despite his excellent performance against Arsenal in the Carabao Cup.
Still, Trippier wasn’t alone in performing badly. In fact, the right-back was seen to be furious at Fabian Schar and his midfielders for failing to engage Ilkay Gundogan, who eventually teed up Marmoush for his second.
City make it 2-0 (Marmoush again) but it left NUFC arguing amongst themselves. Trippier not happy with press (or lack of) from Schar & midfield on Gundogan, who carried too far before providing assist.

Club legend Alan Shearer slammed Newcastle as “pathetic” for their performance at City, which actually feels too kind a word.
Losing at City is of course not a disaster but losing like that to this current version of City feels like one.
Newcastle paid them far too much respect and looked beaten only minutes into the game.
An inferiority complex remains.
