Tottenham will hold talks with Bayern Munich before making a decision about Mathys Tel’s future, according to the club’s former scout.
Mick Brown, who also worked as the chief scout for Man United and Blackburn and remains very well-connected at his former clubs, exclusively told Football Insider that it is currently unlikely that the 20-year-old will remain at Spurs.
However, if they can renegotiate a more reasonable price tag, there is still a possibility that he will make the permanent move to North London.
This comes after Football Insider revealed Tottenham will not pay Tel’s £45million buy clause, although they are keen to keep him at the club.
Winning the Europa League, and thus qualifying for the Champions League, is believed to be crucial in their efforts to convince him of the move.

Tottenham ‘unlikely’ to sign Mathys Tel this summer
Former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson told Football Insider in February that Tottenham will pay £8.3million for Tel even if they opt out of paying his full buy-out fee.

Brown, who has a wealth of experience in top-level player recruitment after over a decade at Man United during their most successful period, insisted Spurs may be forced to move on from the Frenchman if they cannot negotiate a deal.
“From what I hear, I think he’ll be going back to Bayern,” he told Football Insider.
“He’s not quite lived up to expectations since he’s been there, and I think we’re seeing some of the reasons why Bayern were keen to let him go.
“I don’t doubt in an ideal world they’d want to keep him, but he hasn’t shown enough to warrant that price tag of almost £50million.
“It’s a deal that, to put it simply, is not going to happen at that price.
“I expect they’ll speak to Bayern Munich, and if there’s a possibility to bring that price down, then they may see what they can do.
“As much as he hasn’t lived up to the billing, he’s still a talented player.
“If Tottenham can get into the Champions League, I’m sure he’ll be more likely to want to stick around.
“At the moment though, with their place in the league and the money involved, it’s unlikely.”

Pedro Porro update emerges amid Man City interest
Alongside Tel, another player who could be on the way out of Spurs this summer is Pedro Porro, who is attracting interest from Man City.
Football Insider revealed on 27 April that Tottenham will demand £50million for Porro and are not prepared to let him go cheaply given his importance to the team.
As a result, sources say the deal could prove difficult for City to agree and they could instead move on to other targets as they look to replace Kyle Walker.
This comes after Brown told Football Insider in October that Porro is “definitely” a target for Man City and work is being done behind the scenes to move towards a deal.

Postecoglou called to convince him mid-haircut
WHAT HAPPENED?
Tel needed some persuading to make the move from the Bundesliga and has revealed that it was a phone call from his new boss that made up his mind. It didn’t come at the perfect time, though, with the forward halfway through a trip to the barbers when Postecoglou began his sales pitch.

THE BIGGER PICTURE
Tel reportedly had interest from a number of Premier League clubs in January, with Manchester United heavily linked with their own move. The 19-year-old eventually signed on loan for Spurs, though Postecoglou has revealed the club have every intention of making the move permanent with a reported £50m option this summer.
WHAT TEL SAID
Telling the story of Postecoglou’s call, Tel said: “I was in the barbers – one side was good and the other side was not really. He told me, ‘Mathys, I think you are a good player for the team. You can bring some new energy, something special for the team. We need to win a lot of games.’ This call was positive for me.”

WHAT NEXT FOR TEL AND TOTTENHAM?
Tel has made three appearances for Tottenham, scoring his first goal for the club in the FA Cup defeat to Aston Villa, and will have a big role to play as they fight to win the Europa League and improve their current Premier League position of 12th. He will be aiming to score his first league goal for the club during Saturday’s game at Ipswich.
