Everton told to pull the plug on ‘huge’ Calvert-Lewin deal

Dominic Calvert-Lewin could be set to become a free agent at the end of this season, with his current Everton contract expiring in the summer.

The England international has been ever-present at Goodison Park since he joined the club, but he has struggled with consistent injuries and knocks throughout that time.

The 27-year-old is currently unavailable due to a hamstring issue that has kept him out of action since the turn of the year.

On top of that, Calvert-Lewin’s goal returns have dried up this season as he has only managed to score three goals in the Premier League.

Scoring has been a problem for the entire Everton squad, with only three teams having scored fewer goals than them this season in the Premier League.

However, the striker has proven he knows where the back of the net is throughout his career and that could lead to him being handed an extension by the Merseyside giants.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s ‘taken up a clump of wages’ at Everton

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, former Tottenham goalkeeper Paul Robinson has questioned why Everton would want to sign Calvert-Lewin to a new deal as he believes the club would “need somebody else as well,” which would lead to huge wages.

“I don’t know why they want to keep him in all honesty,” Robinson told Football Insider.

“For Dominic Calvert-Lewin, for Everton, his injury record, can you keep him fit?

“Is he going to do it? He hasn’t done it for a number of seasons at that level now.

“The potential was always there with him, he’s a top-class player when you keep him fit and you keep him firing.

“When he’s taken up a clump of the wages like that and not playing and you’re having to scratch your head to remember the last time that you played well and or when he does play well, it’s a standout game.

“A player, a figurehead like that, you want doing that week in and week out, and forever and for me.

“I don’t see going pushing the boat out hugely and offering him a huge contract to keep him at the club, I don’t see the benefit.

“If you want to keep him at the club, you’re going to need somebody else as well.

“It might be a situation in all honesty without sitting on the fence, works for both.”

Everton fans want a fresh face upfront

Calvert-Lewin has been at Goodison Park since 2016, and Everton fans now want another striker for next season.

The supporters have been vocal in their disdain for Calvert-Lewin due to his inability to stay fit, which has proved problematic throughout his career.

Industry insider Mick Brown revealed to Football Insider that Everton are looking to sign a new striker, which could see Calvert-Lewin’s time at the club come to an end.
