5 players set to leave Newcastle this summer as things stand

It’s going to be a massive summer at Newcastle United, with several ins and outs guaranteed after a quiet January.

One thing to consider if the players approaching the final few months of their contract, with SIX Mags due to be free agents come July 1st, as things stand.

That includes Jamaal Lascelles, Matt Ritchie, Paul Dummett, Mark Gillespie and Loris Karius, although it remains to be seen if our club captain will extend his stay on Tyneside by a further 12 months.

The likes of Dummett and Ritchie have been considered key figures behind the scenes under Eddie Howe, who clearly values the experience they offer off the field. However, we can’t afford to carry too many players of this nature in our 25-man squad when they’ve played less than 300 minutes of Premier League football between them all season. Ritchie’s goal on Saturday was a brilliant moment for him, but it’ll more than likely be his last in a black and white shirt.

There’s always a chance Gillespie lands a new deal to tick a ‘homegrown’ box at the club, but it feels likely that Karius leaves to be closer to his partner in Italy.

Lascelles is a tricky one. There’s some talk that we have an option to extend his deal by a further year – much like Emil Krafth – but will he stick around as a back-up option at this stage of his career?
