Newcastle United transfer target Marc Guehi scored an own goal on his visit to St James’ Park.
Less than two minutes after Eberechi Eze missed a penalty to make it 1-1 at St James’ Park, Guehi gave Newcastle a two-goal advantage when he turned Harvey Barnes’ low cross into his own net. Before the first half was over, the Magpies found time for another two goals – Barnes scored before Jacob Murphy, who netted the opener, set up Fabian Schar.
Alexander Isak then added a fifth on the hour mark as United recorded a sixth consecutive win in all competitions to move up to third in the Premier League table, five points inside the Champions League qualification places.

Prior to kick-off, Palace had only lost two of their last 15 away matches but Guehi could have no excuses, admitting that Newcastle were indeed the better team.
“It was tough,” Guehi told Sky Sports Football. “Newcastle were definitely the better team. They showed their class from minute one, so it’s important that we learn from this, and move on.
“It was right from the beginning. You could just tell they were the better team. It’s got nothing to do with the penalty [missed by Palace]. That happens, it’s football. Again, it’s important that we learn very quickly, because we’ve got another important game.
“We spoke before the game about energy and winning your duels and getting up to people, so I don’t think we did ourselves justice with that today. We have a quick turnaround, because we’ve got Bournemouth at the weekend.
“Our mindset is that we have no excuses. We all take responsibility. We all have to look ourselves in the mirror and make sure that we’re better next time. It doesn’t matter where you go. Every game in the Premier League is tough and it’s important that we stand up to those challenges.”

In a parallel universe, Guehi could have been lining up in Newcastle colours this season. Eddie Howe made the England international his number one transfer target last summer but was priced out of a move after Palace demanded in excess of £70million.
It feels rather amusing that Guehi has still done his bit to help the Magpies this season. His own goal at St James’ Park and in the reverse fixture at Selhurst Park saw 24-year-old become only the second player in Premier League history to concede an own goal both home and away against the same opponent in a single season.
Will Newcastle United make another move for Marc Guehi in the summer?
Don’t rule it out. With Guehi out of contract next summer and unlikely to agree a new one, Palace are in a far weaker position than they were 12 months ago.
Newcastle remain keen on signing a new central defender, despite handing new one-year deals to Fabian Schar and Jamaal Lascelles. Guehi fits the profile, but competition for his signature is expected to be high.
