Newcastle United fans rush to say the same thing on social media after Marc Guehi scores another own goal

Newcastle United’s attempts to sign Marc Guehi last summer are well-documented.

Guehi was Newcastle United’s leading defensive target during the summer of 2024 but Crystal Palace ultimately kept their man.

Indeed, Newcastle walked away from talks to sign Guehi after the south London club demanded more than £70million.

Still, the defender has somehow managed to still have a rather prominent role for Eddie Howe’s side this season.

Guehi scored an own goal for Palace against Newcastle during a 1-1 draw back in November. Admittedly, it was a rather unfortunate one, with the defender turning in Anthony Gordon’s driven cross.

What was even more unfortunate, however, was the fact he did it again.

Newcastle thrashed Palace 5-0 on Wednesday night, with Guehi scoring another own goal when deflecting in an effort from Harvey Barnes.

There’s little the 24-year-old could have done on both occasions but, perhaps naturally, he did not attract much sympathy from Newcastle supporters online.

“Guehi probably scored more goals for us this season than if we signed him”, joked one fan.

Another added: “I’m confused, did we sign Guehi? He’s scored 2 goals for us this season.”

“It’s happened again, it’s happened again… Marc Guehi, it’s happened again,” was another rather harsh message.

One fan said: “Guehi has now scored twice for Newcastle…and we didn’t even sign him!”

“Guehi OG!! You can’t make this stuff up,” reacted one supporter.

Other comments included: “Guehi has scored for us twice this season and we didn’t even sign him.”
Marc Guehi is one of Newcastle’s top scorers this season

With two goals in the Toon’s favour this season, Guehi has actually been more prolific than some of the members of the Newcastle United squad thus far. After Alexander Isak, Barnes, Gordon, Sandro Tonali and Fabian Schar, no one has scored more often!

Dan Burn hasn’t scored a Premier League goal this season, though it should be said the header in the Carabao Cup final is one of the most important goals in the club’s history.

Guehi has scored more goals for Newcastle than forwards Callum Wilson and Will Osula this season. That’s not really to criticise them given their lack of starts, just to underline how unlucky the Palace defender has been.

There’s obviously a huge amount of bad luck involved for both own goals but the fact he’s done it twice is certainly noteworthy given the summer-long transfer saga.
