Newcastle United player ratings plummet at Villa as Magpies suffer hammering

Newcastle United suffered an absolute hammering at the hands of Aston Villa to put a dent in their Champions League hopes.
United did not heed the first half warning signs and capitulated after the break with stand-in coach Jason Tindall acting too slowly with tactical changes. The black and whites stay in third place but have now played a game more than their rivals.

The Magpies suffered an early shock after just 33 seconds as Ollie Watkins cashed in on sloppy defending to slot the home side in front after an uncharacteristic Sandro Tonali error. But the game was level on 18 minutes after Harvey Barnes glided a cross to Fabian Schar to head the ball between Emiliano Martínez’s legs to stun the Holte End.
Sadly the goals flowed for Villa after the break as more defensive errors saw Ian Maatsen fire the home side ahead before Dan Burn’s own goal and Andre Onana added to the rout.

The man Newcastle have to thank for keeping the scoreline respectable.
Kieran Trippier 4
This was a game too many for the ex-England man as Villa ran him ragged. A rare off day.
Fabian Schar 3
His worst night of the season. Never looked comfortable after yellow card. Gifted Villa’s Onana a goal after weak clearances and saw the ball deflect past his own keeper early.
Dan Burn 5
One of the better defenders but ended up putting through his own net.
Tino Livramento 5
Was the outlet in the first half. Struggled to trouble Villa after the break.
Joelinton 3
A massive dip below his usual standards. Could not get on top of midfield battle. Booked for first half lunge which stopped him making further challenges.
Bruno Guimaraes 3
Could not play through Villa’s engine room three. Looked leggy. A yellow card summed up a desperate performance.
Sandro Tonali 5
A bad night started with a clearance that resulted in Villa’s opener.
Jacob Murphy 3
A remarkable spiral from what was pretty much international form. Could not get going.
Harvey Barnes 5
Another assist but struggled to make an impact in the second half and was subsequently hooked.
Alexander Isak 4
One real opening but it was tapped weakly at the keeper.
