Bruno Guimaraes vowed to “fight” to take Newcastle United into the Champions League following the 4-1 defeat to Aston Villa.
A six-game winning run came to a brutal end at Villa Park as Unai Emery’s men ran ragged to blow the European race wide open. Newcastle remain third but two points separate them from Villa in sixth.
The top five will secure Champions League football due to the revamped UEFA coefficient system, with England earning an extra spot this season. PSR restrictions have hampered Newcastle’s thinking in the transfer market and returning to the European top table could set up an exciting summer at St James’ Park.
While incomings would generate intrigue for supporters, keeping current stars is of equal importance to the Magpies. Speculation has surrounded the likes of Alexander Isak and the Champions League would be a key tool to keep potential suitors at bay.

However, Newcastle can have few games like the one yesterday if they are to get over the line. Sandro Tonali’s error allowed Villa to take the lead after less than a minute – giving Jason Tindall’s men an uphill battle.
Fabian Schar equalised and the Magpies enjoyed a promising spell before they capitulated in the second half. An 11-minute rampage saw Aston Villa score three goals to secure a rampant home win.
Relegation certainties Ipswich Town visit Tyneside next Saturday as Newcastle aim to get their campaign back on track. Posting on social media a day after the game, Toon skipper Guimaraes reflected on the setback.
The Brazilian also rallied supporters by highlighting their importance ahead of five huge Premier League games. Guimaraes wrote: “(It is )hard to accept what happened yesterday. We have to stick together through every moment. Game by game, we will fight to take Newcastle as high as possible. We count on your support always.”
Jason Tindall blamed fatigue for Newcastle United loss
Tindall – stepping in for Eddie Howe again as the Toon boss recovers from pneumonia – insisted tiredness was to blame. He said post-match: “Over the 90 minutes, Aston Villa deserved to win. We can’t fault the player’s attitude.
“The effort they have put in this week is there for all to see but maybe today was a step too far for us. We were disappointed with the start, but we showed great character to get ourselves back into the game and go in level at 1-1 at half-time.
“From our perspective, maybe a third game in six days caught up with us around the hour mark. The physicality and effort caught up with us. We started making little errors that are unlike us that led to goals. We have had many setbacks, but one thing about the players and the club is we stick together and come out fighting.”
