Newcastle United will need to sell some of their senior players this summer in order to comply with Premier League PSR regulations.
Eddie Howe’s side are on course to seal a return to the Champions League next term and sit third in the Premier League table, but may still have to make sales to avoid breaching PSR rules on financial fair play.
Former Man United scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that Newcastle could be forced into selling Anthony Gordon if a sell-to-buy policy is in place at St. James’ Park, but Howe will hope to avoid this.
Former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson, however, has told Football Insider he thinks Howe will look to sell “low hanging fruit” instead of the Magpies’ key players, such as the Celtic-linked Martin Dubravka.
Newcastle have been made to regret selling Elliot Anderson to Nottingham Forest 12 months ago after the Reds’ own charge into the Champions League places, but similar transfers are expected this summer.

No need for large-scale ‘overhaul’ at Newcastle United
Newcastle have long since ran the risk of breaching Premier League PSR rules, but they could cash in on Jamaal Lascelles and Callum Wilson if Champions League qualification triggers contract extensions for the pair.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Robinson said Newcastle must take a ruthless approach in order to avoid PSR breaches this summer, arguing that Howe’s sizable dressing room needs to be cut down to size.
“We talk about Newcastle and the FFP and PSR – they were clever in the last window, they let Elliot Anderson go”, Robinson told Football Insider.
“Yes, it was for a lot of money and they didn’t really want to let him go; and you see how well he’s done at Nottingham Forest.
“I said in the last window that if Newcastle come out of it with the squad that they went into the window with, they’ve had a good window – cut off some low hanging fruit in the dressing room.
“Yeah, the squad’s big, there’s a lot of players in that dressing room, but I don’t think they need a massive overhaul at Newcastle.”

Newcastle need to avoid wholesale changes this summer
Howe is desperate to keep hold of Newcastle’s star players in the coming months, and a Champions League spot will leave them well placed to retain Alexander Isak, Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali.
Keeping the trio could force Howe to make additions on the cheap this summer, but Robinson previously told Football Insider that Newcastle should avoid signing Dominic Calvert-Lewin on a free transfer.
The makeup of Howe’s squad at St. James’ Park in August remains to be seen, but with so many high-value assets in Newcastle’s squad, there’ll still be a battle to keep hold of their big-name superstars.
