Keith Downie delivers good and bad injury news from Newcastle United’s training ground ahead of massive Brighton game | NUFC Feed
2 – 3 minutes
Newcastle United are preparing to take on Brighton and Hove Albion at the Amex on Sunday, live on Sky Sports – kick-off is at 2pm.
It’s a massive game for Newcastle in terms of the race for the Champions League, but also because the Magpies have been beaten twice by the Seagulls this season and it’s time for some payback.
Newcastle overcame the tricky obstacle that was Ipswich Town on Saturday, but now, with all due respect to Ipswich, the bar is being raised as Brighton have shown already that they are more than capable of getting one over on Eddie Howe’s boys.
It’s important, then, that Eddie Howe has no fresh injury concerns holding him back with his team selection.
Joelinton was not seen in training but Anthony Gordon looks fine
Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie was at Newcastle’s Benton HQ today watching the lads in training and while he noted that Anthony Gordon was in full training despite Eddie Howe’s concerns, there was a notable absence in the form of Joelinton as Downie reported via X.
🇧🇷 ❌ No Joelinton at training for Newcastle on a hot & sunny day at Benton for this morning.
The midfielder has seen a specialist on a knee problem that saw him miss the win over Ipswich.
🏴 ✔️ However Anthony Gordon was in full training as #NUFC gear up for a crucial trip to Brighton on Sunday.
Joelinton missed the game against Ipswich due to the aforementioned knee issue and while we’re still not sure when he’s likely to return, the combination of the word ‘specialist’ and his absence from training suggests we’d be lucky to see him again this season. Indeed, shortly after writing this, The Daily Mail published an article saying as much.
Is it time to start Lewis Miley over Joe Willock?
Joe Willock filled in for Joelinton in the midfield against Ipswich, but the general consensus from fans was that he didn’t really do enough to justify his selection.
We’d much prefer to see youngster Lewis Miley restored to the starting lineup for the remainder of the season if Joelinton isn’t going to be passed fit to play.
The academy graduate just brings an assuredness that Joe Willock has been lacking of late.
