In truth, there won’t be many Celtic fans who care whether or not it happens but there will be plenty of Rangers supporters who do.
Celtic’s trophy domination over the last two decades has caused a lot of pain over at Rangers but a guard of honour at Ibrox when Brendan Rodgers has made the Parkhead club Scotland’s most successful football team, that can’t happen right?
The last time Rangers won the league this conversation popped up and what current temporary manager Barry Ferguson said back then about his team getting a guard of honour gives a clue as to how this might go on Sunday.
Barry Ferguson ‘very much’ doubted Celtic would offer guard of honour
The COVID title is the only one Rangers have won in the last 14 years. Prior to that Celtic had won nine titles in a row and there was not talk of guards of honour then.
But when the Ibrox club finally won a league this conversation bizarrely raised it’s head and what Ferguson said then hints at what will happen in this Sunday’s Glasgow Derby.
Speaking to the Go Radio Football Show, Ferguson said, “Listen this is kind of a new thing doing the guard of honour, it’s different up here remember.
“I’m sure when it’s all done and if Rangers do win it, I’m sure Celtic will admit Rangers were the better team.
“Previously when Celtic have won leagues, certainly in my time, you have to be the better man and say ‘look, Celtic were better than us this season’.
“So, in terms of having a guard of honour, I very much doubt it will happen but it’s something that doesn’t concern me and I’m sure it won’t concern anyone at both clubs.”
Should Rangers give Celtic a guard of honour?
In a word, no. Not because of the tension it may cause but as previously mentioned, Celtic fans don’t really care.
The travelling Parkhead support will head to Ibrox this Sunday lunchtime to celebrate once again as champions inside Ibrox and that will hurt the Rangers support more than any guard of honour will.
Celtic have bigger fish to fry with a potential treble on the line. A win at Ibrox will just be the icing on the cake.
As for the guard of honour, Rangers can keep that and Celtic will keep the trophies.
