‘Open to it’ – Brentford give official Bryan Mbeumo to Newcastle United transfer stance

Thomas Frank has conceded Brentford are a “selling club” and could lose Bryan Mbeumo amid reported Newcastle United interest.
Last summer saw the Bees lose star striker Ivan Toney following his England heroics at Euro 2024. Saudi Pro League club Al-Ahli swooped in to sign the former Newcastle player and, fast forward to the present, Mbeumo is the man on everyone’s lips.
The Frenchman – who represents Cameroon at international level – has 24 goal contributions in the Premier League this season to carry the burden left by Toney. Mbeumo was already sought after by European clubs but he has developed further in 2024-25.
He has just one year left on his contract but Brentford have an option to extend for another year. With that in mind, now would be the perfect chance for the London club to sell up to optimise their return.

Newcastle fans have craved a right-winger for a while but that wish may have subsided slightly in recent months. Jacob Murphy has enjoyed his best season since joining the Magpies eight years ago.
However, the consensus is Newcastle will need to add to their ranks given the added European demands next season. As it stands, Murphy is the only natural right-winger in the first-team ranks.
Mbeumo would provide a left-footed option and impressed when Newcastle were thrashed at Brentford in December. Speaking to Sky Sports, Bees boss Frank admitted they are a selling club, although the player is happy at the Gtech Community Stadium.
“I know Bryan is very happy at Brentford,” he said. “He’s thriving, doing well and playing fantastic. What happens in the future, I don’t know. “I’ve said many times, we are a selling club. But that’s also to reinforce that there are maybe 10 clubs in the world that are not selling clubs.
“Of course, if the right price – and that’s going to be expensive – is coming, then I’m pretty sure that the club will be open for it. But I’m very happy he’s here and I’m convinced Bryan will be happy playing football here. A lot (laughing). I would say a lot. There have been times before where a club has knocked on our door and we’ve said no.”

Mbeumo previously opened up about his love for Frank and the Brentford “family” – which he has been a part of since then. He said in 2023: “I have a very good relationship with him (Frank). He talks to me a lot – even if it’s a bad moment for me, he’s here to help me to reach the top.
“He always gives me confidence. I can only thank him. He gives me advice, mentally, and on the pitch as well, so it’s great to work with him. I think it’s his closeness with the players. It’s not only me, it’s the whole group who he is very close to. I think it is one of the best things a player could have.”
“It’s a family where everybody can speak to everybody and laugh with everybody. Sometimes we do group stuff outside with the team and I think that’s great. Every time someone joins us, we try to make them as confident as possible. This is what I felt when I came here as well.”
