EMOTIONAL BARRY FERGUSON GIVES BRILLIANT INTERVIEW AS RANGERS FANS WERE HEARD CHANTING HIS NAME IN THEIR FINAL HOME GAME OF THE SEASON

BARRY FERGUSON confessed it was emotional for him as he applauded the fans in possibly his last home as interim Rangers boss.

Ferguson’s name was chanted as he walked round the pitch with the players at full-time and with his job hopes still on the line.

Two-goal Cyriel Dessers took his club total to 50 in 103 games for the club over two seasons with Nico Raskin also netting after Sam Cleall-Harding having given United a first half lead.

On the chanting for him, Ferguson said: “It means a lot because it’s a club that I’ve been at since I was seven or eight years old.

“I’m not scared to say it was a bit emotional.

“Since I’ve come in, I’ve given it everything.

“I’ve given it everything that I had.

“I said in my first interview that I was going to be me. I’m not going to try and kid anyone on.

“I really enjoyed it. It was good to get that reception.

“We’ve still got one game to go on Saturday against Hibs at Easter Road. We need all focus to go on that now.

“My biggest takeaway is that I’ve got a few more wrinkles, I’ve got a few more grey hairs. That’s for sure. But listen, I’ve loved every minute of it.

“I knew it wasn’t going to be perfect when I came in. But I was willing to take that challenge on. And it has been challenging, believe me.

“But as I said, every day I walk into a training centre, every day I walk through the front door, it’s a privilege to be here and work here.

“And it’s not over yet.

“It’s only one game and you never know what’s around the corner.”

Ferguson, meanwhile, paid tribute to striker Dessers for his landmark goal return.

He said: “I’m delighted for him because I think a big man comes in for unfair criticism. I really do.

“But to work with him for the last three months, I see how much effort he puts in on the training field.

“He works really hard at his game. He gives you everything.

“It’s a brilliant return this year, 28 goals.

“When we got that penalty, normally the skip goes up and takes them. But I’m thinking to myself ‘he better score this or he’s going to get one from me.’

“But thankfully, Cyriel hit the back of the net. I’m delighted for him and it’s a brilliant return.”

Dundee United boss Jim Goodwin – whose side is still ahead of Euro rivals St Mirren and could finish fifth or even fourth on Saturday – said: “For the opening 45 minutes I thought the players were excellent and we frustrated Rangers.

“Young Sam Harding was terrific all night and deserved his goal.

“Tiredness and fatigue crept in for the team.”

“I just got the phone call and since that phone call I’ve thought to myself ‘I’m just going to be,’ I’m going to grab it with both hands and give the club everything like I did as a player.

“Listen, it’s been an interesting three months but it’s been a really enjoyable time for me.”
