Kris Boyd believes Celtic’s Scottish Cup final defeat to Aberdeen has only strengthened Brendan Rodgers’ position as he looks to push for significant investment in the summer transfer window.

Rodgers had already made clear before the Hampden showdown that his squad needed freshening up, even with a domestic treble on the cards. Some had viewed those comments as routine, given the club’s success, but Boyd reckons the loss to Aberdeen, which ruled out Celtic’s treble hopes, underlines just how vital a summer rebuild could be.

“Are you listening to Brendan a couple of weeks before, and he was saying about having to invest in the squad and get better quality in, and a lot of people would just think it was just pain at lip service, because the season they’ve had, they were about to win another treble, and everybody thought, you’re saying this, and yes you want to get players in, but you don’t really need them as such.

“Brendan Rodgers will want to bring bodies in. He has to, he has to. But not only bodies, I don’t think he’s going to sign squad players now.

“If they get better players, they’ll be stronger in those positions. So, listen, it’s a big summer, but there is no doubt it helps Brendan Rodgers being able to convince the people he needs to at Celtic to, you know, we need to get players in.” [SunSport]

With the transfer window opening on June 12th, Rodgers will be hoping to be backed in reshaping key areas of his team. While Celtic were consistent across the league campaign and lifted the League Cup, there are still major improvements needed.

Rodgers has already secured the return of Kieran Tierney, with Ross Doohan also returning to help with the European quota, with more incomings expected as Celtic look to maintain domestic dominance and prepare for another tilt at Europe.

There will be several exits this summer too. Scott Bain has also been told that he can leave the club. Many will follow suit, you’d imagine.

Celtic need a big refresh, and the money will need to be spent.
