Kieran Trippier has sent his best wishes to long-serving Atletico Madrid captain Koke after he penned a fresh contract at the La Liga giants.
The message ironically came on a day when Newcastle United announced a pre-season friendly with Atletico a week before the Premier League opener. Eddie Howe will pit his wits against Diego Simeone as the Magpies aim to defend the Sela Cup.
Premier League tune-up aside, the game will bear special importance to Trippier, who spent two-and-a-half years in the Spanish capital. The 34-year-old won La Liga with Atletico before a desire to return to England saw him join Newcastle in January 2022.
He is now set to reunite with his former club for a top-flight curtain-raiser on August 9. Ahead of the clash, Trippier posted a love-heart emoji and message saying “my captain” as Koke – a one-club man and Atletico skipper since 2019 – penned a contract extension.
Atletico Madrid announce Koke contract
Koke led Trippier throughout his time in Spain – which was the precursor to him becoming a leader at St James’ Park. The club confirmed he will extend his 25-year career at the club on Tuesday.
“Jorge Resurreccion, known as Koke, will continue to wear the red and white of Atletico de Madrid next season after extending his contract with the club until 30 June 2026,” an announcement read. “His current deal includes an annual renewal clause at the end of each season, which both parties have agreed to activate.
“The homegrown midfielder made his first-team debut on 19 September 2009. Since then, he has made history at the club he has supported his whole life, becoming, match by match, the player with the most appearances in Atlético de Madrid’s history: 681.
Koke is also one of the most decorated players in club history. To date, he has won eight trophies – two La Liga titles, one Copa del Rey, two UEFA Europa Leagues, two UEFA Super Cups and one Spanish Super Cup – placing him just behind Adelardo, who lifted ten trophies during his time at the club.

Newcastle United announce double-header
Newcastle United Women will also face Atletico Madrid Femenino earlier in the day. The Magpies announced on the club website: “Taking place on Saturday 9th August, fans can enjoy a double-header featuring two of the most respected clubs in European football, with one ticket granting access to both matches.
