Ferguson shares instant reaction to Martin appointment news at Rangers – Exclusive

Rangers finally have a new manager in place after confirming the appointment of Russell Martin on Thursday.

The Gers sacked Philippe Clement at the end of February and placed Barry Ferguson in caretaker charge until the end of the 2024-25 campaign.

After announcing a few weeks ago that Ferguson would not be staying on, a number of names were linked with the top job at Ibrox.

Davide Ancelotti was the favourite for the Rangers job for a while, but Martin interviewed well for the position and is now officially the man to lead this new era at Ibrox.

Derek Ferguson shares early Martin ‘pressure’ warning

Martin‘s appointment on 5 June did not go down universally well, with many believing Ancelotti would have been a more exciting choice.

Indeed, even Steven Gerrard – who walked out on Rangers, remember – would likely have been more universally accepted.

And in the view of Rangers-mad pundit Derek Ferguson – the brother of Barry – Martin will need to get off to a fast start if he is to win over the fanbase.

Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News after Martin’s appointment was made official, Ferguson said: “This is a little bit underwhelming for a lot of the Rangers fans.

“But we will get behind him as we do for our managers. There is no room for error and you feel and he certainly needs to hit the ground running.

“That means a perfect start to the campaign. If not the pressure will be on.”

Martin needs instant backing from American investors

Martin’s appointment comes at an exciting time for Rangers, with Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises now also taking majority ownership.

The hope is that Rangers already have summer transfer targets lined up ready to go, meaning Martin will have a stronger squad to work with than the one that ended last season.

Martin has his work cut out to win over the fanbase, but by winning games he will certainly do that.
