‘I can confirm’: Journalist says he has been told that Newcastle United have held talks over ‘talented’ Marc Guehi alternative | NUFC Feed
3 – 4 minutes

Now that the transfer window is open again, Newcastle United appear to be stepping up their activity.

While it has been reported that Newcastle are set to open talks with Brighton over a move for João Pedro, transfer journalist Graeme Bailey has revealed that the Magpies have held talks with representatives of another long-term target.

Marc Guehi is still thought to be Eddie Howe’s first choice for a new centre-back again this summer after missing out on the Crystal Palace defender last year.

Even though it seemed like it at the time, Marc Guehi wasn’t the only defender Newcastle had their eye on, and that continues to be the case 12 months on.

Ousmane Diomande’s people have been in touch with Newcastle
Newcastle have spoken to Ousmane Diomande’s representatives

Newcastle had a strong interest in Sporting’s Ousmane Diomande last year, and the club have continued to keep tabs on the Ivorian, with Graeme Bailey telling Geordie Boot Boys that he has impressed Newcastle’s scouts.

“Newcastle have been doing work on Diomande since last year, he has impressed their scouting team on numerous occasions.

“They have been spoken to and he is very much on their radar, I can confirm that.

“Diomande’s people are working on potential options and Newcastle have been spoken to.”

Eddie Howe could take Ousmane Diomande to the top

Newcastle have long admired the 21-year-old, and now other clubs are also stepping up their interest. We are surprised that Manchester United have yet to make a move after their boss, Ruben Amorim, had this to say about Diomande during his time working with him as a coach at Sporting.

“Diomande plays with both feet, and is very physically strong.

“He is a very talented player and most people don’t know how many clubs were after him. The truth is that we managed to get him because we took a risk by telling the kids that they’re coming to play for the first team, he’s got a lot of scope for progression.”

If a player has a lot of scope for progression, then there aren’t many coaches better than Eddie Howe at coaxing that potential to the fore. Dimonade would be a fantastic signing for Newcastle, but it still feels as though Guehi is the priority.
