Newcastle United have been linked with Lille striker Jonathan David – who has one year left on his contract
Jonathan David confirmed earlier this summer that he could be on the move amid reported Newcastle United interest.
The Magpies are one of several Premier League clubs linked with the Canadian goal machine. An impressive 84 goals in four seasons for Lille has made David hot property – with out-and-out strikers an increasingly dying breed.
Chelsea and West Ham United are reportedly rivalling Newcastle for his signature. Last summer, Lille are understood to have demanded £50million for the 24-year-old but, with a year left on his contract, there is hope that a cut-price deal can be agreed.
Anywhere in the £25million region will appeal to Toon chiefs as they target a reliable backup to Alexander Isak. While centre-back and a right-winger remain the priority, there are growing concerns over Callum Wilson’s fitness.
The England international picked up another injury – his 14th as a Newcastle player – and may miss the start of the season. David ticks a lot of boxes and could be one to watch before the window slams shut.
Speaking before the Copa America, where he scored two goals, the Canadian hitman left the door open for a summer move. He said: “There’s always a lot of noise. But I’m still here, I’m still at Lille. From there, we’ll see if I end up going back to Lille for preseason or if I’m somewhere else, I don’t know.
“Things are obviously moving slow. I think things are going at the right pace. Obviously, I think everyone sees there’s a lot of clubs interested. Right now, I’m still waiting for an offer to be put on the table to Lille.
“Then after, I’ll have to make a choice and make the right choice. Whether it’s to leave, or to stay or what team do I pick, really.”
