The Magpies’ goalkeeping department has increased in numbers this summer. Loris Karius left the club, however both Odysseas Vlachodimos and John Ruddy have arrived.
Nick Pope and Martin Dubravka complete the senior pack, while Max Thompson is currently with the squad in the Far East.
It is likely 20-year-old Thompson will be loaned out again after spending the first-half of last season on loan at Northampton Town. With Pope as No.1 and Vlachodimos and Ruddy recently through the door, all fingers point to a potential exit for Dubravka.
The 35-year-old – who was previously unhappy at being second-choice to Pope and left to join Manchester United on loan in 2022 before returning – is seeking clarity on his position. Dubravka has been linked with a move away.
And head coach Eddie Howe has admitted the position will be assessed as the summer progresses.
Howe told reporters in Japan: “It means there’s competition for places and we haven’t seen a lot of Martin yet, we’ve done a couple of training sessions with him since coming back but he’s had time off because of his international exploits.
“That’s something we’ll assess as we go on.”
Howe has already admitted that he expects some first-team players to leave the club this summer. Newcastle have already sold Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh to Premier League rivals Nottingham Forest and Brighton respectively for a combined sum of £68million.
Meanwhile, question marks remain over Callum Wilson, Kieran Trippier and Miguel Almiron’s futures.
