Rangers seal stunning deal for winger as Russell Martin finally lands Vaclav Cerny replacement…

RANGERS have bolstered their attacking options ahead of the new season with the arrival of Djeidi Gassama.

The highly-rated winger has officially sealed his switch to Ibrox from Sheffield Wednesday.

He joins on a four-year deal – and SunSport understands the fee is £2.2m.

Gassama, 21, bolsters an area where Rangers have desperately needed reinforcements.

And crucially, he’s in the door before the Champions League qualifiers against Panathinaikos get under way in a week’s time.

The exit of loan star Vaclav Cerny made signing wide players a priority this summer for the Light Blues.

Gassama, 21, has now arrived from crisis-torn Sheffield Wednesday.

The deal had been thrown into some doubt last week, despite Gassama being spotted already wearing Rangers training gear at St George’s Park.

Owls owner Dejphon Chansiri was apparently refusing to sign-off on the deal amid talks of a takeover of the club, while Gers boss Russell Martin insisted that everything appeared done at the Light Blues’ end.

Now, it’s a done deal.

Born in Mauritania, the pacey winger has been capped at under-20 level by France.

He spent time in the youth ranks at a number of French clubs before joining Paris Saint-Germain in 2019.

The winger impressed during the 2021/22 Uefa Youth League, scoring five goals for the club’s youngsters during their run to the quarter-finals.

Gassama made his senior debut for the Ligue 1 giants in a 4-0 win over Montpellier in May 2022.

It was a PSG side that boasted the likes of Kylian Mbappe and Lionel Messi.

Gassama was linked with some huge clubs, including Borussia Dortmund, before making a permanent move to Sheffield Wednesday in August 2023.

He’s gone on to make 84 appearances for the Owls.

Gassama was the club’s star man last season, winning the club’s Player of the Year award.

He scored seven goals in 43 appearances.

Speaking after the 2-2 friendly draw with Club Brugge, Gers boss Martin confirmed big changes were coming to his squad.

He said: “I expect the squad to look different in a week’s time.

“But in a couple of weeks so much can happen in football, so I don’t know.

“We definitely want to do more. Also probably some players need to move on as well.

“I don’t know the answer but it will definitely look different in a week’s time.”
