THE first major test of the Russell Martin and Andrew Cavenagh/49ers Enterprises era arrives on Tuesday and it’s a humdinger as Panathinaikos come to town.
Getting some kind of positive result to take to Athens for the second match is a necessity if the Gers are to have designs on a game changing £40m bounty from reaching the new Champions League phase for the first time.
But equally crucial will be events unfolding in Nyon 24 hours EARLIER as Martin’s men find their name paired with potential opponents in the third qualifying rounds of both the Champions League AND the Europa League.
That’s because Uefa will draw map out Rangers‘ path in both competitions – whether they beat Panathinaikos and live on in the Champions League, or lose to them and drop into the Europa.
Victory for Rangers against the Greeks over two legs in the course of the next week to ten days would keep open the dream of Champions League group stage play and remove the possibility of no group stage football at all this season.
Defeat, though, would leave that doomsday scenario open, and blow a drastic hole in the Gers’ potential earnings this season.
It’s worth noting that it isn’t just Rangers fans who will be glued to events in Nyon on Monday.
Hibs will learn the next phase of their journey, whether in the Europa League or Conference League, if they can make it past FC Mijydjytlland.
Dundee Utd will also learn the next opponents on their Conference League qualifying journey – assuming they can make it past FC UNA Strassen of Luxembourg.
Here’s everything you need to know.

Will Rangers and Hibs be seeded and can they meet?
