Everton fans getting excited on deadline day after hearing ‘serious player’ could join
Mark Marston

Everton are exploring a number of potential deals ahead of the transfer deadline tonight.
David Moyes has been keen to sign 10 new players this summer after several high-profile departures, leaving the squad thin.
So far, Everton have been able to bring eight fresh faces through the door at Finch Farm, with Jack Grealish the most notable addition.
The Toffees have been looking at Tomas Soucek from West Ham United, however, their latest bid worth £14m was rejected.
Now, there is another transfer rumour emerging and it’s moving at real pace.

Everton fans so excited at potential signing of Merlin Rohl
Everton are closing in on the signing of Merlin Rohl from Bundesliga outfit SC Freiburg.
The under-21 Germany international has flown to Merseyside to complete a deal that could be worth up to £17m.
Rohl is considered an alternative to Soucek, whose proposed move to Everton now appears to be off the table.
Here’s how supporters have been reacting to the deadline day signing on X, formerly known as Twitter.
“Rohl is the perfect physical profile for us now and post Gana, gives us a lot more options tactically, cheaper and younger so has better resale value,” @James_UTFT posted.
“From what I’ve read this Rohl is a younger version of Soucek, which is something I’d rather us be spending money on,” @Neilo_m added.

Lad looks impressive in the U21s for Germany and looked like someone who could slot in quickly. Very happy if this comes off. https://t.co/bE6gHiGc7l

“If we can get Merlin in Everton’s midfield it’s going to be absolutely magic,” @DaveyBilo said.
@P_Fletcher10 commented: “Absolute quality player. I’ve been after this one since last year.”
What kind of player is Merlin Rohl?
Rohl recently celebrated his 23rd birthday, so he is still learning his trade and has plenty of room to develop.
Interestingly, despite often playing as an advanced midfielder, talent scout Ben Mattinson reckons he’s best suited as a number six.
“Merlin Rohl is an interesting profile, Mattinson explained.
“6’4” CM who plays as a box crashing 8, with close control for his height, decent final ball. But Röhl’s composure on the ball, line breaking passes and physicality to use his body to win the ball screams that he should be converted to a #6.”
With Idrissa Gana Gueye coming towards the end of his career, perhaps Moyes is planning for Rohl to be his long-term successor.

Kobbie Mainoo’s arrival at Everton before the transfer deadline does not appear completely out of the question.
Football Insider understands that Mainoo is being pushed out of Man United, though Ruben Amorim wants the young midfielder to fight for his spot at Old Trafford rather than leave on loan.
Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid are both interested in the academy product, who has slipped down the pecking order behind Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes over the last few months.
Rumours have started to circulate that David Moyes could help to save the 20-year-old’s 2025/26 campaign, bringing Mainoo on loan to the Hill Dickinson Stadium ahead of 1 September.
He has made 73 first-team appearances since graduating from the club’s academy, never once leaving the club on loan, but Alan Myers, a reliable source on Everton transfers, has shared his view on a potential deal.

Kobbie Mainoo to Everton not totally ruled out
Responding to a fan’s question about rumours of Mainoo joining the Toffees, Myers wrote: “I’m sure we’d have looked at it,” to which the fan asked if that meant it was a matter that has now passed.
Myers finished by saying, “No, just looked at it. I think that one looks as if something may happen, not necessarily with us, but somewhere, so who knows.”

David Moyes to complete summer overhaul
Football Insider verdict
Supporters have been treated to exciting deals for Jack Grealish and Tyler Dibling, who made his Everton debut against Mansfield Town during the week.
Carlos Alcaraz, Thierno Barry, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, and Adam Aznou have added some much-needed depth to the squad as well, which could be key for the campaign ahead.
The Toffees opened their season with a frustrating defeat to Leeds United, but that was quickly forgotten about during a historical win over Brighton at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Of course, there are still weaknesses in the squad, with Moyes expected to address Tim Iroegbunam’s disciplinary concerns, though he would likely make way if Mainoo were to join.
The 20-year-old already has plenty of experience in the Premier League and on the European stage, leaving Moyes with a rather simple choice if he is to leave Man United this summer.
Supporters will be expecting a couple more deals to go through before the transfer window slams shut, but as of right now, it has been a successful summer for the Toffees.
