Newcastle United have to be smarter in the transfer market because their revenue is lower than the other clubs competing for Champions League football.
That is the view of finance expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider it’s difficult to qualify for European football’s premier club competition if you can’t pay players higher wages.

Newcastle qualified for the Champions League in 2022-23 after finishing fourth in the Premier League table.
The Tyneside club’s latest published accounts showed their revenue rose to £250.3million for 2022-23, while CEO Darren Eales confirmed in July he expects the figure to have reached a club-record high last season by surpassing £300million.
But it could prove difficult to increase their revenue again this season as Eddie Howe’s side will not be competing in Europe following their seventh-place finish last season.
The north-east giants had a relatively quiet summer transfer window in terms of incomings after signing Lewis Hall, Odysseas Vlachodimos, William Osula, Lloyd Kelly and John Ruddy on permanent deals.
Newcastle forced to spend less due to lower revenue
Borson revealed Newcastle’s lower revenue means they don’t have as much money to spend in the transfer market.
He told Football Insider: “Without Champions League football this season, they are going to struggle to beat last season’s revenue number.
“If you don’t have the revenue coming in at the top, you can’t pay the wages and, if you can’t pay the wages, it is really hard to qualify for the Champions League.
“It becomes a bit of a vicious circle.

“If nothing changes in terms of the rules, then they are just going to have to be smarter in the market to finish higher than the other clubs that are also trying to get there.
“There is no way around it, they just have a lower revenue and, therefore, they can spend less.”
