Fabian Schar remains a vital part of Eddie Howe’s plans at Newcastle United despite Malick Thiaw grasping his opportunity to impress.
The classy German international has quickly captured the imagination of Newcastle fans and has his own chant in the bag already. However, Schar, who will be 34 in December, is still very much in the picture as far as Howe is concerned, and while his current deal ends on June 30, a further decision must be made on his future.
There will be no shortage of interest in Schar if he became available on a free transfer, and if no deal is agreed, the club could look to cash in with January the last opportunity to cash.
Having already attracted interest from the Saudi Pro League, Schar will be free to talk to overseas clubs in January if he does not extend his contract. But if Thiaw and Sven Botman keep up their solid form, it is tricky to see where Schar fits in.
When asked about the situation, Howe said: “That’s why you should never think too much. Football changes so quickly.
“I’m really pleased with Sven and Malick, I think they’ve done very well together. I thought they could play well together, but you need to see it work.
“But it doesn’t mean anything other than they’ve done very well to this point. Who knows what’s going to happen in the future? Fabian is very important, and Dan Burn is very important because he can play two roles.”
Schar has previously stated on the record that he would love to end his career at St James’ Park but may have to accept a change in role given the options available to Howe. Schar was an unused substitute against Nottingham Forest during the 2-0 win in the Premier League.
Howe hinted that Burn’s versatility, with the Blyth lad slotting in well at left-back will be crucial, not least with Lewis Hall and Tino Livramento out injured.
Howe said: “With injuries to Tino and Lewis, that takes even more importance on. You’ve also got Jamaal Lascelles, Emil Krafth, we’ve got some very good defenders who have done well for us.
“Any of those players can play, and it’s up to those guys who have the shirt to keep playing well.”
