Sources: Ross Wilson Agrees to Leave Nottingham Forest for Newcastle
Ross Wilson has agreed to become the new sporting director at Newcastle United, GIVEMESPORT sources understand.
The Magpies have been on the hunt to replace Paul Mitchell since the summer after his unexpected exit at St James’ Park, and it’s now understood that a deal has been reached with Wilson to take over.
The club are now in advanced talks with Nottingham Forest over a compensation deal, but the expectation is that an agreement will be found.

Wilson, who has previously had spells at Southampton and Rangers as a director of football operations and sporting director, has long been admired by chiefs at St James’ Park.
It’s understood that Wilson has a good relationship with manager Eddie Howe, while he also knows the Saudi PIF and co-owners James Reuben well too, which has counted in his favour in the process.
Wilson has been at Nottingham Forest since 2023 and helped them to reach European football competition for the first time in 30 years last season, but it’s believed that he views the Newcastle job as a step up in his career.
His approach is expected to dovetail well with Howe, who likes a hands-on approach when it comes to recruitment and football matters, while Wilson likes to create a strong club culture and provide the pieces to support the manager.
Newcastle have had a mixed season so far in 2025/26 with just two wins from their opening seven Premier League fixtures, while they have won once from their two games in the Champions League this season. Their only defeats have come against Liverpool, Arsenal and Barcelona.
They will return to action following the international break when they take on Brighton at the Amex Stadium, before hosting Jose Mourinho’s Benfica side in the Champions League in midweek, with the team hopeful of continuing their winning ways having defeated Nottingham Forest 2-0 in their last outing.
