Newcastle United’s priority in January is to sign a right winger.
The Magpies failed to do that in the summer, with the search for a centre-back taking centre stage once top target Michael Olise became unavailable. Sadly, Newcastle United did not bring in a centre-back either, with Paul Mitchell failing to sign Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace.
It is rumoured that Newcastle could make a fresh move for Guehi in January, but he might not be the Magpies’ top target. Instead, it has been reported that Newcastle will prioritise signing a right winger over anything else.
However, it remains to be seen who Paul Mitchell and Eddie Howe will target.
Newcastle United linked with Antoine Semenyo
There will be rumours regarding Anthony Elanga, after Newcastle tried and failed to land him during the summer transfer window.
But now another Premier League attacker is reportedly on the Magpies’ radar – a player who has enjoyed a very bright start to the season.
According to Give Me Sport, Newcastle United are watching Bournemouth’s Antoine Semenyo ahead of the January transfer window.
They add that Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur also have their eyes on the 24-year-old, with Bournemouth eager to retain Semenyo’s services so soon after losing Dominic Solanke.
How Semenyo has started the Premier League season
Semenyo has started the new Premier League season very well, and is justifying those links to clubs like Newcastle.
He is proving that he could be a smart addition to Eddie Howe’s squad, with Semenyo boasting four goal contributions from Bournemouth’s first seven Premier League games.
One of those was an assist against Newcastle, as the two sides played out a 1-1 draw at the Vitality Stadium. Semenyo almost scored that day too, rattling the post from distance as a poor Newcastle side won a lucky point.
The winger has picked up where he left off last season, with Semenyo taking his game to another level under Andoni Iraola. During the 2023/24 campaign, Semenyo scored eight goals and provided two assists in the Premier League. One of those goals came at St James’ Park during a 2-2 draw.
However, the move to the Stadium of Light did not go to plan.
Semenyo made just seven appearances for Sunderland during his loan spell, six of which came as a substitute. He failed to score or provide any assists, while his time in the North East was brought to a premature end by COVID.
Fast forward four and a half years and Semenyo is suddenly an established Premier League winger, and a player who would not look out of place in a Newcastle United shirt.
Mitchell has his eye on Semenyo, but faces competition from Liverpool and Tottenham.
