Shea Charles is a player Leeds United look determined to sign this summer.
The Whites have already put in a bid of around £20million for the midfielder. However, Southampton have reportedly rejected Leeds’ initial approach.
Charles would certainly add more quality to Leeds’ midfield and would give Daniel Farke even more of a selection headache when it comes to selecting who will start in his engine room next season.
However, United have seemingly been dealt a major blow in their pursuit of the midfielder.
Ben Jacobs delivers worrying Shea Charles update
In a post on his official X account, talkSPORT’s Ben Jacobs recently posted a worrying Charles update.
Jacobs confirmed that the Whites’ initial bid was rejected; however, talks are still ongoing.
The concerning part is what comes next. Jacobs claims that Southampton value their midfielder “significantly higher” than what United’s initial bid was.
His report does not state the exact number Southampton are after for Charles. But the fact that our bid worth around £20million appears to be nowhere near enough is concerning.
To me, the fact that our bid was “significantly” less than what Southampton are looking for would perhaps suggest they want around £30million for Charles.
For me, this would be a step too far. Splashing around £30million for a player who would not be a guaranteed starter for us would surely be a waste of our transfer budget.
Leeds United’s Shea Charles pursuit puzzles me
If you told me that to start the window, we’d have put in a £20million bid for a player, my last possible guess is that it would have been for another midfielder.
Personally, I’m a big fan of our current options there. Ethan Ampadu and Anton Stach are arguably our two best players, with Ao Tanaka and Sean Longstaff battling it out for that third position in midfield.
Behind them, we have Ilia Gruev to come off the bench if we need to see out a game.
Whilst in a heartbeat I’d take Charles and move Gruev on instead. I think other moves need to be prioritised first.
A left-winger, right-winger, left-sided centre back, left-wing back and goalkeeper are all signings I’d make before another central midfielder.
Would Charles improve Farke’s current midfield options? Absolutely.
But I feel like the ceiling of our squad could be elevated further if we signed players in other areas.
Perhaps we are planning to strengthen these areas too. Hopefully, that’s the case. This would mean a move for Charles is simply in addition to bringing in another couple of wingers and a goalkeeper.
But if Charles does sign, and our backup wingers for next season are Dan James and Brenden Aaronson, for example, I would definitely be questioning why the 49ers prioritised signing another midfielder.
As always, I’d be happy to be proven wrong. But especially considering the form Tanaka ended last season in, I just don’t see the logic with another midfielder potentially being our first signing of the summer.
