The performance was generally positive but was frustrating to see Jaden Philogene sent off late on for a seemingly innocuous challenge.

He replaced Bailey on 61 minutes and arguably should have been hooked sooner by Emery after another poor performance.

The Jamaica international just seems to be off, potentially unfit, and that is certainly having a negative impact on his game.

The 27-year-old just seems to be off the pace slightly right now and his lack of urgency was summed up after Watkins managed to get an effort on goal while falling.

Bailey was on his heels on the right-hand side as this happened and didn’t appear to show any desire to close the gap between himself and the goal as the effort headed towards Bernd Leno.

The German shot-stopper pushed the ball away from goal towards the Villa winger who was too far away and slow to make this opportunity count.

The only moment that the ex-Bayern Leverkusen man got close to the ball, it was too late as Antonee Robinson smashed the ball away to relieve the pressure.

On another day Bailey gets to the ball before the American international for an easy tap-in but is clear that he is far from his best and isn’t doing the basics.
Leon Bailey miles off it against Fulham

This moment as well as his stats show just how poor he was on the day, registering just 38 touches and 13 passes across 61 minutes [FotMob].

The winger registered just one successful dribble with a 33 per cent success rate while failing to complete a single cross out of two attempts.

Last campaign, the 27-year-old was superb and regularly helped out his right back but against Fulham, he didn’t have much, if any, defensive influence.

This saw him win just one duel despite attempting nine, registering a win rate of just 13 per cent of his ground duels while also failing to win a tackle.

With a clash in the Champions League against Bologna coming up, Emery may drop the winger to the bench and give him some time to rediscover his best form.
