Alan Shearer was in no doubt when naming ‘the most underrated player in Newcastle’, He’s convinced

Alexander Isak was one of the standout performers for Newcastle United last season. The Swedish striker notched 25 goals in 40 appearances in all competitions last season, setting up another two goals for his Magpies’ teammates.

However, contrast that to this season and the Magpies main source of goals has just one goal and one assist in seven outings and is struggling for form. That hasn’t been helped by picking up an injury earlier this month – a broken toe ruling him out of the games against Manchester City and Everton.

At the same stage in 2023/24, Isak had six Premier League goals to his tally and was in blistering form. What a difference a year makes.

Despite his struggles in front of goal this season, Newcastle United supporters have given Isak their full backing in our latest ChronicleLive survey. We asked our readers a number of contract related questions and it makes interesting reading.

When asked which player most needed a new contract, 48 per cent of those who took part in our survey chose Isak as the player most in need of a new deal. Anthony Gordon received 30 per cent of votes, while Fabian Schar took 16 per cent of the vote. Sean Longstaff received three per cent, Callum Wilson two per cent and Martin Dubravka just one per cent of votes.

It’ll probably come as no surprise to hear that 57 per cent of votes would give Isak a contract over the £200,000-per-week mark, given his importance to Eddie Howe and Newcastle United. It was only last week teammate Longstaff put him and Sven Botman in the world class bracket on The Rest is Football podcast.
