It was Unai Emery’s first win in eight matches, having previously lost in the Carabao Cup, Champions League, and Premier League.

Steve Sidwell blown away by Tyrone Mings vs Brentford
Emery replaced Pau Torres with Tyrone Mings in the heart of the defence against Brentford.
Mings made his first Premier League start of the campaign and was magnificent, dominating his opponents aerially and making some vital interceptions.
The 31-year-old was also a commanding presence in defence, leading by example with his display, as Villa looked a lot more solid with him alongside Ezri Konsa.
The Englishman, who they signed for £25 million from Bournemouth in 2019, sent a message to Emery on Wednesday night and former midfielder Steve Sidwell was full of praise.
Speaking on Amazon Prime Video post-match, Sidwell said: “The run that Aston Villa are in, this is exactly the performance and the character that they needed.
“We said about him [Mings] before the game with the leadership qualities he’s shown. He was absolutely superb tonight.”

Mings was out of action for over 14 months, so it was always going to take him a while to get up to speed.
In the 1-0 loss against Club Brugge in the Champions League, Mings was lambasted over his bizarre handball as Villa tasted their first defeat in the competition.
It would have dented the defender’s confidence however, it was clear he was back to his best in Wednesday’s victory, as he won the most aerial duels of any player (5) and made the second most clearances (6).
