Local foodbanks and Everton in the Community programmes have benefited after Everton and catering partner Sodexo Live collaborated with Fans Supporting Foodbanks to ensure food from the postponed Merseyside derby did not go to waste.

The adverse weather caused by Storm Darragh led to the Blues’ home match against Liverpool being called off on Saturday morning amid concerns for supporter safety in the area around the stadium.

However, food, including pies and sausage rolls that would have catered for the sell-out 40,000 crowd, has now been donated to foodbanks and good causes across the city, with the help of Fans Supporting Foodbanks volunteers.

Other items will be gifted to Everton in the Community and distributed via their programmes and initiatives throughout the coming week.

Fans Supporting Foodbanks had been due to occupy their usual position in Goodison’s Fan Zone, where they collect donations from supporters ahead of each home fixture.

Immediately upon learning of the postponement, the group contacted Club officials and, working with Sodexo Live, the wheels were set in motion to quickly move the food from Goodison to where it could be redistributed.

Information relating to a rearranged date for the fixture – the final league derby to be played at Goodison – will be announced in due course.
